ACTs Of Love #2 – Taxi Uncle

31st Aug 2010, I was on my way down to church for staff meeting, was running a little late so I decided to take a cab, with absolutely no expectations that it would be an opportunity to share about Jesus. The taxi uncle asked me which route I wished to take, giving me the options of the highway or flyover. So after much consideration and his proposed suggestion, we settled for the highway despite of the foreseen traffic because he was unfamiliar with the flyover route. 5 minutes into the decision, the uncle apologizes for his lack of knowledge in the route and told me that he only started driving taxi for only 1 month. Immediately after he said that, the prompting of the Spirit came knocking on my heart. It was pounding so fast, at that moment I also heard a still small voice to tell me to ask him about what had happened. I hesitated, and the more I hesitate, the greater the poundings on my heart. I was looking for an opportunity for me to start a conversation, I took my lozenges out and offered one to the uncle, after he declined my offer, I decided to ‘jump out of my boat’ and ask him what happened. He started sharing whatever that happen. To cut the long story short; he worked in a MNC as a sales and marketing for 22 years got retrenched (8 years ago). Tried starting a business 3 times, but failed all 3 times due to backstabbing, he lost all his money to the extent of selling his condominium and car. So I asked him what he was most worried about now. Without hesitation, he mentioned about his family and his 2 kids. Trying his best to provide for his kids to finish their studies to get good degree and survive on their own has been a constant struggle, mainly because he feels that he has no more ability to support them. I asked him if he was a Christian, and he said no but his brother use to be a pastor. So I shared with him how Jesus came into my life and turned my most desperate situations around, that in Him we can find hope and future. Whatever worries we have, we can trust Him enough to know He is in control and He can and will bring us through. Talking about betrayal, sharing with him how Jesus himself was betrayed and He definitely understands. We ended our conversation when he stopped the meter, and I requested to pray for him. We both bowed our heads and I started to bless him and his family, asking Jesus to watch over him and grant him favor in his new endeavor as a taxi driver. My ‘take home’ from this experience is this; behind every crowd and multitude, every person we meet, known or unknown, all of them has a story behind their life and their smiles. Some just need that divine intervention, some just need to hear a message of hope, some just need someone to tell them they are able and there is a God up there who died for them and love them. Will you be that one? Jason Chua
